About the Artist: Tim Hanley
Songwriting has always been a quiet, persistent thread in Tim Hanley’s life.
In his early years, a powerful religious experience profoundly altered his direction and sense of inquiry. As he began to wonder about life, meaning, and existence, something unusual occurred: vivid images would arise in his mind — not as fantasies, but as experiences resembling memories — often connected to people, ideas, or questions he was contemplating. Many of these impressions were later confirmed as accurate, offering insights that seemed to emerge from somewhere deeper than ordinary thought.
Influenced by thinkers such as William James, who described transformative spiritual experiences as legitimate windows into deeper truths of consciousness, Tim returned to college to study philosophy. He was searching for a language and framework capable of holding what he had seen and felt. During that period, he performed music and wrote poetry and songs, weaving spiritual questions together with personal narrative — using art as a way to think, feel, and understand.
Years later, following a diagnosis of early-stage dementia, Tim returned once again to songwriting — this time not as an academic or spiritual pursuit, but as an act of preservation and reconnection. Through the writing of two books and more than thirty-five original songs, he was able to restore his cognitive abilities, reestablishing clarity, continuity, and confidence in his own mind.
Songwriting became a form of cognitive and emotional anchoring — a way to remain present, engaged, and connected to memory, loved ones, and identity. Writing did not merely document experience; it actively reorganized it. The creative process itself became restorative.
Most of the songs Tim writes today are drawn directly from lived experience and real relationships, shaped by memory, reflection, and love. Some are deeply personal. Others explore spiritual and philosophical questions that have followed him throughout his life. All are expressions of connection — reminders that creativity is not only a means of expression, but a way of remembering who we are.
